School Readiness

How can I prepare my child for their very first school experience?
Ready for School Connects (RfSC) is a two-week summer program that helps both children and their parents get ready for school. It connects parents and their children; families to other families; families to schools; and families to community agencies and services.

The program lays a strong foundation for a positive educational experience and a smooth transition to Kindergarten.

The program is offered by EYET in four schools in July and August:

  • Crescent Town Elementary School
  • Secord Elementary School
  • George Webster Elementary School
  • Sprucecourt Junior Public School
  • Rose Avenue Junior Public School

It includes Healthy Child Screenings to ensure that potential barriers to a child’s ability to learn are identified. If there’s a problem, parents are linked to the appropriate resources.

RfSC allows your child to experience what a real, live classroom is like. Parents also get to go to school during those two weeks. They learn about how the school system works, child development, how to help their children achieve success, where to go if they experience difficulties, and more.

Who can participate in Ready for School Connects?
Have you:

  • been in Canada for less than 5 years?
  • speak a first language that is not English?
  • have a child under 5 years old who is registered for Kindergarten at  Crescent Town, George Webster, Secord Elementary Schools or St. Paul’s Catholic Elementary School?

If this describes your family, Ready for School Connects will help build a solid foundation for your child’s education.

Other ways EYET helps children and their families get ready for school . . .

Junior Kindergarten registration for the Toronto District School Board and the Toronto Catholic District School Board take place in February and March every year. EYET staff work closely with our school partners to help you register your child for school. Our goal is to ensure this is a positive first experience for you both.

Nipissing Developmental Screenings are an important tool to help you, as a parent, assess how well your child is doing in their development as measured against specific early childhood milestones.  As part of your school registration experience, you will be offered the opportunity to go through this quick developmental checklist to see if there are any issues you should be aware of and where to go for help if you need it.

Healthy Child Screenings are for families who are concerned about their child’s development.  If you have a concern, you may want to participate in one of several Healthy Child Screening sessions offered each year. Through a partnership with Access Alliance Multicultural Community Health Centre, we offer families the opportunity to meet with a wide range of specialists and professionals who will do initial assessments of speech and language, hearing, cognitive development, vision and more. If any issues arise, parents will be linked to the appropriate resources. EYET staff will also help you navigate the system.
